There are quite a number of different types of wood floors that are available for you to choose from. You can get the type of look you really want for your home, when you understand some of the basic things about the various types of wooden floors. We’re going to show you some information concerning just that.

There is solid wood flooring, which comes in three main types, with each type available in unfinished and pre-finished versions. In terms of the unfinished flooring, the floor must be sanded after you’ve gotten it and after you’ve installed it. The pre-finished version, on the other hand, is the one which is sanded at the factory before you get it, so that you only need to install it. The three types of solid wood flooring include:

  • Strip flooring, which has a set width and varying thickness of the wooden planks. It may range in thickness, from 5/16-inches to 3/4-inches in width.
  • Plank flooring, which has only two thicknesses, but a range of different widths. You can only get it in thicknesses of 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch or you can get it in widths from 3 inches to 8 inches.
  • Parquet flooring, which appear to look very different from your usual hardwood floors, are composed of geometrical patterns with individual wooden slates, and held steady by adhesive or mechanical fastening.

There is engineered wood flooring, which is often confused with laminate wood flooring – they’re different by the way. However, this flooring effect is created by joining layers of plastic veneer with actual wood. Laminate wood flooring, on the other hand, doesn’t actually contain any wood.

There is also acrylic-impregnated wood flooring, which is infused with color and sealant throughout it in order to create a “surface” type finish right through the wood. It is very hard and it’s great for keeping out moisture and blocking scratches; it’s normally used in commercial buildings instead of residential ones.
